Live Log

The Live Log is an interactive application, that visualizes sport-statistics in a graphical way.

Sport-statistics are usually displayed in two-dimensional tables with a lot of numbers. The Live Log takes a step into the third dimension to get another information layer.
Our data source was a basketball game of the NBA – Game 1 of the final series 2010 between the L.A. Lakers and the Boston Celtics. On their website, the NBA provides the whole game information tabularly. The Live Log reads this data with the programm VVVV and so it builds the fundament for the application.

Events of the game, like a made shot or an assist, are displayed by a sphere. Depending on the time (X-Axis), the player (Y-Axis) and the kind of the event (Z-Axis), the sphere is positioned differently in space. Besides that, the spheres have different colors, depending on the quality of the events (e.g. a made shot = positive, turnover = negative) and different sizes, depending on the quantity of the events (many events of a player).

Essence of the Game

You can scale the time to see the sum of the game. During scaling, the spheres change their size. The spheres size is related to the amount of events the player had in the game. The more events a player had in the game, the bigger the sphere. Besides the size, the spheres also change their color. The color represents the quality of the events and is related to the Player-Efficiency-Statistic ((Points + Rebounds + Assists + Steals + Blocks) - ((Field Goals Att. - Field Goals Made) + (Free Throws Att. - Free Throws Made) + Turnovers)) The brighter the sphere, the more positive is the Efficiency-Rating and vice versa.
